Proverbs 1:1-35

What is a Proverb?

The Hebrew word for proverb is mashal and it means comparison with figurative speech – simile, metaphor, allegory, adage, etc.  Proverbs teach moral lessons and values. These are stated in short sentences full of meaning that can be applied to many situations.

What are the values taught?

These values focus on character traits needed and dangers to be avoided in order to live a godly life.  The qualities presented are applicable to all people throughout history and are based on respect for authority, biblical Christianity, and wisdom of mature role models.  The values presented in the book of Proverbs are extremely practical to all people throughout history for successful living.

What is the purpose of the book of Proverbs?

The first chapter develops the purpose.  This collection of wise sayings is written to create moral skillfulness in the reader (1:3-4).  It is also written to provide mental discernment in making decisions in life (1:6).

What do we learn from Solomon?

There are two basic lessons that can be drawn from Solomon as a role model.  First, one’s greatest strength can ruin a person’s life.  Second, it is not enough to know the right thing to do; only acting on that knowledge in obedience creates successful living.
