Proverbs 1:8-9                                Bible Bling

We are going to look at what can be called “Bible bling”.  In popular culture, the word bling refers to expensive jewelry that shouts, “I’m rich”!  Verses 8 and 9 speak of what you are to wear that shouts, “I’m wise”!  Your headgear is your father’s instruction and around your neck is the pendant of your mother’s teaching.

Solomon’s parents were King David and Bath-sheba.  Their story is one of great sin and great forgiveness, 2 Samuel 11-12.  David was a remarkable leader described in Scripture as a man after God’s own heart.  The book of Psalms reflects David’s heart for God.  Psalm 51 is notable in that it is his plea for God’s forgiveness and restoration after his great sin with Bathsheba.

Deuteronomy 6:8-9 speaks of accessories to be worn by parents and to adorn their homes.  The jewelry of God’s commands is to be worn on hand and forehead.  Entrances to the home are also to be decorated with God’s commands.

God promises to bless His people through generations because parents are faithful in teaching their children.  David modeled obedience to God’s law even when he failed.   He confessed His sin, sought forgiveness, and was restored.  This was part of the garland and pendant given to Solomon to pass on to his children.

Why do you think an accessory to your clothing is used as a metaphor in these verses?

Read Psalm 51 as a prayer today.

What is God telling you about Himself and how should you respond?

Glorify and enjoy our forgiving God today.

HAVE A BLESSED DAY!
